Estimates, not guarantees

Every calculator on Smart DecoratorAdvice gives an estimate based on the measurements you enter and the assumptions shown on its page, such as waste allowances, coverage rates and product yields. The amount you actually need can differ because of the product you choose, the condition and shape of the area, how materials are cut and laid, and how carefully the area was measured.

Before buying materials, check the coverage or yield printed on the product, and consider buying a small extra amount, especially for materials that vary between production batches, such as tile, paint and wallpaper.

Not professional advice

Our guides and calculators give general information for planning. They are not engineering, architectural, electrical, plumbing, gas, heating and cooling design, legal or financial advice, and they do not take the place of someone who can inspect your home.

Please talk to a qualified, licensed professional before you rely on a result for:

  • anything structural, such as retaining walls, decks, stairs, rafters, beams or footings;
  • electrical work, including generator connections;
  • gas appliances, water heaters and venting;
  • sizing heating, cooling or ductwork for a whole home.

Building codes, permits and safety

Building codes and permit rules vary by location and change over time. Where a page refers to a code, such as the International Residential Code, it is for illustration. Your local building department decides which rules apply to your project and whether a permit or inspection is needed.

Always follow the manufacturer’s installation and safety instructions and use suitable protective equipment.

Costs

Cost results use the prices you enter, or example prices shown on the page. Real prices vary by region, supplier and time. Get written quotes before you commit to a budget.

Information from other sources

Some pages use figures published by manufacturers, standards bodies and government agencies, and link to the source. These figures were correct when we checked them but may since have changed. If our page and the original source differ, follow the source.

Found an error?

If a result or figure looks wrong, please tell us and include the numbers you entered. We look into every report and correct the page if we find a mistake.
